Stephanie Roberts Art

It is my interpretation of the blended industrial and natural landscapes of my home, that continue to inspire my choice in thematics and materials that define my work. Living in the industrialised Port City of Newport, I have over time absorbed the materials from this landscape and utilised their qualities in my work. Lead is the signature component material of my mosaic artwork. Lead allows me to lift the pencil line from the surface of the substrate and bring it to the surface of the mosaic, creating added definition of form, height diversity and an undulating flow, I call a 'contoured mosaic'. This way of working enables me retain a freeness of form and a liner appearance to my mosaic artworks that ultimately, keeps me connected to the fluidity of my drawings. I enjoy releasing the mosaic, tesserae or object, 'breaking them free' of confinements of cement by placing them in resin, in suspension, on glass or through exploring animations. I also use this approach in creating assemblage artworks or installations using the theories of mosaic construction, andamento and rhythm, to inform the visual appearance of an artwork. My approach to making is very personal, coming from a place of depth, compassion and mindfulness. I create artworks that share and explore emotions, social observations or personal experiences of life, with women's and environmental issues often highlighted. My work is often full of metaphors and hidden meaning, embedded into the materials chosen or manufactured.
