Anabella Wewer

A graphic designer and native of Caracas, Venezuela, Anabella is an award-winning mosaic artist and metalsmith.
She is co-founder of Black Box, a design studio specializing in Web-based applications for Fortune 500 companies, where she has been Creative Director since 1994. In 2004, she discovered mosaics as fine art while visiting the Vatican, prompting her to begin studying the art form close to home. Soon after, she began training in Italy under world-renowned master mosaicists in the classical tradition.
Her work is rooted in unusual materials and processes, a sense of place and time, and a characteristic graphic feel that often incorporates type and her love of maps and fossils. Her classical training in mosaics has developed into a practice in modern abstract mosaics, exploring themes such as the emergence of color and the resurgence of life, as well as unexpected, hidden beauty. Her interest in the qualities of different materials, their provenance and their history inform her work.
