Rogue Mosaics

Sollinger's picture
I am an artist with a background in forestry and biology, and my work is deeply influenced by natural themes as well as the masterpieces of Van Gogh and the Iimpressionists. This fusion of science and art has led to my distinct style and international recognition in the world of mosaics, including honors such as Best in Show at SAMA's MAI 2010. I create intuitively, breaking away from traditional styles to embrace a more personal, expressive approach. My unique direct method involves dry-laying tesserae before performing a double flip—a process that allows me to build illusions of reality by leveraging the human tendency to find pattern in apparent chaos. While my mosaics may lack fine detail when viewed up close compared to more traditional realists, the overall effect emerges through the interplay of color, value, and contrast—something I learned from Van Gogh's use of flow and Seurat's insights into how the brain processes visual information. Over the years, teaching mosaic workshops has allowed me to refine my techniques and continuously evolve my craft. My distinct style and unconventional methods have also led to opportunities to serve as a juror for international mosaic exhibitions, including CMA2's Coming Together exhibition in Eugene, Oregon, and BAMM's show at the London School of Mosaics.
