Event 2024 Tracey Cartledge Masterclass

Tracey Cartledge

An Introduction to Mosaic Restoration in the UK

Addressing Mosaics from the Victorian Era to Modern Times

Exclusive New Workshop hosted by Tracey Cartledge

Working on Manchester's Victoria Station Restoration

This masterclass is ideal for anyone wanting to find out more about the process of mosaic restoration.

The workshop has been devised especially for the BAMM Newport event, where it is being piloted for the first time. There will be an opportunity to explore some of the approaches and methodologies used today to restore mosaics in a variety of settings.

During the course of the day, we will look, in detail, at a number of case studies and discuss the rationale that informed the decisions made and the outcomes achieved. There will also be ample opportunity to experiment, try out tools and materials and take part in some pre-prepared practical exercises.

Tracey Cartledge has been working on mosaic restoration projects alongside her 30+ years’ public art practice for just over ten years. During this time, she has worked with Cliveden Conservation to restore an historic floor for a royal property and with the Mosaic Restoration Company on a number of projects, including the prestigious Old Admiralty Building in London and the Our Town Hall Project in Manchester (ongoing) as well as fulfilling her own independent restoration contracts. For example, in 2014, she was awarded the contract for mosaic floor restoration at Manchester's Victoria Station as part of a major heritage construction project.

In the early 1990s, Tracey began working with communities to produce and install durable and robust pavement mosaics for shared public spaces such as parks, town centres, housing estates and forecourts to civic buildings. Since then, she has consistently refined and developed her skills and knowledge by studying, experimenting and taking courses in a wide range of approaches to mosaic, both traditional and contemporary. In tandem, Tracey has learned from accomplished and knowledgeable professional colleagues within the building conservation and heritage construction sector, both ‘on the job’ and more formally, gaining a number of qualifications and awards along the way.
