You are Here, three words that are always true. Rachel Sager recently shared this new project with our membership at the Modern Mosaics Annual forum in Scarborough. If you were there, you would have heard the story of
The Ruins Project, a coal mine turned mosaic museum. Storytelling, geology, place, meaning and courage, ending with a special invitation to BAMM members. If you were not there, you can catch up by watching our
YouTube video of the presentation
right here.
The presentation was followed by a special
Power of Place masterclass hosted by Tracey Cartledge and Alison Waters of Grit Studios in Stockport (Manchester). During this full day workshop, mosaic makers were invited to experiment and explore a number of techniques for creating bespoke tiles, small treasures and direct mosaics made with found objects embedded into coloured mortars to support a future project of your own. Specifically, a project that focuses on the specific historical, social, aesthetic and spiritual qualities of a special place that you choose to make a mosaic for.
Tracey and Alison will be offering another opportunity to attend this unique workshop in the new year at their own studios. The date and joining arrangements will be advertised on Modern Mosaics social media and in the monthly e-news.
In the meantime, get your order in now for your unique
You Are Here tag. They are individually made from high-fired stoneware clay, using oxide to highlight the lettering details. No two are exactly the same but they all comply with the project guidelines and by using one of these official UK ceramic tags in your project, it becomes part of the UK collaboration with the global Ruins You Are Here project.
Your tag will be randomly chosen from the next batch of unique handmade tags, expected to be available for dispatch on
1st December.
Shipping is included for UK Mainland only, to purchase from outside please
