The focus of Sunday is on masterclass learning opportunities and on enabling BAMM members to work together, alongside Newport residents in the Fringe Event Community Make event to experience the joy of collaborative making, sharing and learning.
Selected masterclasses will offer members the opportunity to improve their technical skills in using smalti and on mosaic restoration; and to learn the skills behind the art of running successful community workshops and creating public art. The smalti masterclass will produce a selection of elements that will form part of the artwork produced concurrently in the Community Make.
Led by four Wales-based Mosaic artists, the Fringe Event will draw together local community groups (with experience or new to mosaic) to work on a set of modern everyday figures that draw inspiration from the Old Green Budd mosaics. The Sunday Community Make will enable BAMM members involved in the community workshops to work closely with members of local community groups.
There will also be the opportunity for BAMM members to work collectively on elements of the Fringe Event community projects under the overall guidance of the local artists who have designed these pieces. There will be no charge for this activity, which all BAMM members are welcome to join.
All of the elements will be incorporated into the series of legacy works being made by the four Fringe Event community groups of Newport in association with BAMM..
NB The Fringe Event is dependent on a successful funding bid to the Arts Council - the outcome is not known at the time of writing. If it is not successful, alternative plans are being developed to enable BAMM members to work together on a collaborative, legacy piece for Newport.
