Introduction

Get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Urban Symbiosis!

This event is about art that celebrates urban living and the power of art to bring communities together. BAMM is collaborating with local artists to bring you a unique experience in Newport, South Wales over the weekend of 4th, 5th, and 6th October.

The heart of this event will be a new exhibition, showcasing the talents of BAMM members, which will respond to a special new exhibition dedicated to the artistic legacy of Kenneth and Oliver Budd in Newport. The event will take place at the prestigious Riverfront Arts Centre and Theatre, with the Fringe Event at The Place.

Join us in October to immerse yourself in a world of creativity and community as we explore the art of urban living together.

In addition to the exhibitions opening on the evening of Friday, 4th October, we have a line-up of events planned for the weekend! Following the BAMM AGM on Saturday morning, we'll be hosting a series of engaging and interesting talks, focusing on the Budd mosaics and public art. The formal part of the day will wrap up with a special guided walking tour of the mosaics in Newport, with Oliver Budd and Stephanie Roberts.

The weekend will also include a fun social event on Saturday evening, a masterclass workshop programme on Sunday and a community make event where local artists, community groups and BAMM members will have the chance to work alongside each other to create a series of legacy mosaics.

Aims and Legacy

We aim to recognise, celebrate, and promote our artistic heritage within Newport, the UK and beyond.

With this event, we would like to document the mosaics, to celebrate the artform and to pass on the heritage to the community and future generations.

Importantly, the BAMM event has been developed in collaboration with local artists who have put together a Fringe Event, enabling local community groups to join in celebrating the spirit of the Budd mosaics by designing and making a series of four mosaic figures, which will continue to inspire creativity and excitement in the art of the everyday in urban environments. This will culminate on the weekend of BAMM’s events bringing everyone together. (NB The Fringe Event is subject to the successful outcome of a funding application to the Arts Council.)

We will inspire and involve the local community of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, as well as local artists.  Together we will celebrate, communicate and create around this valuable and distinctive artistic record of Newport’s social history, that links to the many industrialised and thriving riverside towns and cities across the country, in the 1920s and 1930s.
