Biographical Info

Broken Colour Mosaics. I'm Andrea Britnell and I love colour. Actually that sounds trivial - I think I feel colour - mild synesthesia perhaps. To me, colour and pattern are a bit like music. When the harmonies are right it makes you feel...well,  wonderful. It fascinates me the way you can put colours together to give a totally different mood. Each arrangement makes me feel a different way and so many schemes and styles draw me in. I find myself standing, staring at inanimate objects or the natural world, or a fabric in a shop window. I’m fascinated with the play of light or depth of shadow, or the way that clashing colour just lifts the composition, wishing I could replicate what I see. Over the years I have enjoyed making art, for fun, in many forms but mosaic has me hooked. It's an amazingly versatile medium and I love the way I can paint with the tiles. Many styles appeal to me but I'm trying my hardest not to be distracted, and to focus on the style I have developed with my mosaics. I use unglazed ceramic tiles, Winckelmans, and Cinca  in their beautiful subtle palettes and I’ve recently introduced Emaux de Briare tiles which have a slight lustre and brighter hues. I am drawn to the Arts and Crafts Movement and the creation of pattern with botanical themes. I create intricate, wall plaques for interiors, floral compositions and landscapes. I feel I am growing with every piece and aim to push myself into more challenging palettes and designs.
