fragment2form mosaics

Chris's picture
Having studied History of Art, I wanted to become more hands-on and make my own art. I came to mosaic making after looking for an expressive art form that allowed me the freedom to explore texture, as well as shape and colour. The variety of media that can be used to create mosaics means there are really few limits to what can be used, which I find very appealing. I mostly use stone, marble, stained glass off-cuts and broken china/porcelain. The images above show some of my boxes of goodies. Why fragment to form? Mosaicists see images as deconstructed surfaces. Our aim is to explore exciting ways of representing two or three dimensional objects using a wide variety of materials. These small pieces (tesserae) are then united to become something whole and beautiful.
